How much money does one need to comfortably retire in the Bay Area at age 35? Request
I retired in the Bay Area in 2007 age 40, With 2 kids in school, I own my home. I have found that you need at least $10k per month (after tax) for basic living expenses plus extra money for travel and the yearly property tax (this is my single biggest expense at $40k).
Also extra money for cars, toys, new roof etc.
Your looking at $6-10M carefuly invested in well run, lowcost funds to provide you a monthly income and keep up with inflation. Look at Vanguard 5* funds like VWINX & VWELX.
If you try to retire with much less, you will be miserable, fretting over loosing your money because you had to use risky investments to get the returns you need.
I also have a vacation house in a beautiful village in Mexico, I could retire there on 1/10th the money. Silicon Valley is expensive because your constantly surrounded by pretentious shows of wealth and it makes you spend more. When in Mexico, my desire to spend money and have shiny things diminishes significantly.
