The best thing you could do is live in an area where crime is low, with gated residential houses preferably with securtiy entrance. Other than that this is your best option.

1. You will need securtiy system at your house, cameras moniters and some sort of storage device for the 24/7 recordings.

2. German shepard, labs, doberman, pit bull... Etc you get the point. (My small jack russel has barked away an intruder before! )

3. Having some training with a firearm would come in handy, ensure you know how to use it before you go buy one
